Mother’s Day - Happy mother getting gifts from kids at home

Make the most of Mother’s Day 2021 – on a budget!

Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and even though it’s looking a bit different than usual this year, that doesn’t mean to say that you can’t have a lovely day celebrating as a family!

If your kids are in need of some gentle inspiration as they plan the perfect Mother’s Day, point them in the directions of these fab and pocket money budget-friendly ideas for making this year an extra special one…

Make her a homemade card

There’s nothing quite like receiving a homemade card – not only are they great when you’re on a budget, but they’re fun to make, and the added personal touch makes them that little bit more special!

If you’re looking for some last-minute inspiration when crafting your own cards, check out these 3D tulip cards by The Best Ideas for Kids, or these fun fingerprint flower cards from Activity Village that are easy for everyone to have a go at.

Rustle up a special breakfast in bed

Why not get the day off to a special start for your Mum and show her how much you care by cooking up a breakfast in bed just for her? Not only is it a great way to refine your culinary skills, but it also gives her that little bit extra time to relax in the morning.

BBC Good Food has a great selection of kid-friendly breakfast recipe – from delicious and nutritious banana pancakes, to yummy baked dippy eggs and soldiers! Or, if you want to whip up a treat in a matter of minutes, this strawberry breakfast sundae from Great British Chef’s kids collection makes a quick yet delicious treat to kickstart the day.

 Get creative together

Mother’s Day is a great day to spend some quality time creating something together with your Mum, and luckily there are tonnes of free artistic activities to try out!

Activity Village has a variety of fun craft ideas for kids and adults to create together – including these bright and beautiful tissue paper flowers, which could make a beautiful bouquet for Mother’s Day! And if you want to have a go at creating some jewellery together, check out artist Declan O’Meara’s free virtual Mother’s Day jewellery making workshop: it’s bound to be a fun experience suitable for the whole family.

Explore the great outdoors

The weather is (mostly!) starting to show some hints of spring now, so one great way to spend a Mother’s Day in lockdown is to make the most of the brighter weather and go for a family outdoors adventure! If you’re on the lookout for a new spot to explore near you, The Wildlife Trusts has a helpful nature reserve finder, or, if you’re lucky enough to have some sunshine, you could even plan a family picnic in your local park (or an indoor picnic if the weather is a bit wet)!

Something for the whole family

Even if you can’t see all of your family in person this year, you can still arrange to spend some time with everyone virtually. You could set up a get together on Zoom or Skype to have tea with Granny and Grandpa, or you could even organise a fun virtual games night for the whole family.

And if you’d rather spend the evening relaxing at home, why not plan a film night? Get the popcorn ready, and prepare to wind down together in front of the TV watching one of Mum’s favourite films!

Mother’s Day is all about celebrating Mums for everything they do – and even if it’s not quite the same as usual, there are still plenty of budget-friendly ways to make this year just as special as always!
