This weekend is set to be an extra special one, as up and down the country people get ready celebrate the Platinum Jubilee. Commemorating the Queen being on the throne for 70 years, the Jubilee celebrations take place over an extra-long weekend, starting from this Thursday, so it’s the perfect time for a fun family get together!

Celebrate at a special event

The Platinum Jubilee is certainly a special milestone and an event that you may want to celebrate with others in your community.

Street parties are especially popular on these special occasions and are often fun for the children too – whether it’s decorating the street or having a banquet on your road, celebrating with friends in the community is a great way to enjoy the Jubilee weekend. What’s more, as everyone who joins in usually has to contribute in some way, street parties are pretty budget-friendly too! However, if your neighbours aren’t hosting a street party, or you’d prefer to attend a larger-scale event, the official Jubilee website has a helpful guide of all the events taking place nationwide – from special parades and beacon lighting, to community picnics and garden parties, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Get your home Jubilee-ready!

Some children really enjoy decorating the house for special occasions – and the Jubilee weekend is the perfect excuse to get the kids involved with creating some handmade decorations for your home.

Bunting is a staple for getting homes (and streets!) decked out for Jubilee celebrations, and is very easy for children to make on their own. All they’ll need is paper, scissors, glue, string and colouring pens or pencils, and your children can get to work on putting their stamp on some traditional bunting. If your children are looking forward to getting dressed up this Jubilee weekend, they can even have a go at making their own royal-themed accessories – we love Today’s Parent’s suggestion of pipe cleaner crowns, which are fun for children to make and a great accessory for a Jubilee celebration.

Jubilee-themed cakes and bakes

The Jubilee is a perfect excuse to bake some special and traditional treats for any parties or celebrations you have lined up – and some family time in the kitchen is a great way to keep the kids occupied.
