Father’s Day - cool surprise from daughter for Father's Day

Father’s Day gifts and activities for kids on a budget

Father’s Day is fast approaching, so if you or your kids are on the hunt for some last-minute activity inspiration or gift ideas, look no further.

No matter the budget you are working with, it’s always the thought that counts and Dad is bound to appreciate the effort! We’ve collated some of our favourite low-cost ideas for making Dads everywhere smile this Father’s Day, without your child having to blow their budget completely.

Get creative in the kitchen.

It’s usually a pretty safe bet that any edible, homemade gift, will likely be well-received by Dads this Father’s Day.

Fortunately, there’s no shortage of celebration-themed recipes out there for kids to try. For breakfast, we love BBC Good Food’s child-friendly blueberry & lemon pancake recipe, or Gathered Again’s amusingly-named ‘Dad-vocado’ toast. If he’s not full up after all that, why not follow up with a lunch-time medal-shaped pizza, courtesy of Fun Family Crafts (a medal and a pizza – what more could he want?).

Getting crafty with cards and art.

Second to edible delicacies is likely to be a hand-crafted gift – made all the more special when designed by their most cherished family members.

If  they’ve decided to make Dad a breakfast fit for a king, to continue the royal treatment throughout the day your kids could even try making him a crown, following Activity Village’s handy ‘King Dad’ crown instructions. Alternatively, these ‘One in a Minion’ gift boxes – designed by the great crafting mind Red Ted Art – are a handy, versatile gift, which your child can then fill up with Dad’s favourite goodies.

And that’s not forgetting the card-making part – perhaps the most important thing to remember on Father’s Day! While some might like to go freestyle and design something based on a special memory or experience they shared with their Dad, if they’re after some artistic inspiration Hobbycraft has 16 fun, artistic ideas for younger children.

Spend time together.

With summer finally here, it’s a perfect time of year to spend the day out and about making memories. Playing a sport is always a fun way of getting the whole family involved, and football, rounders and cricket are all super summer-friendly activities, as well as requiring little in the way of equipment. If all that activity is likely to get your belly rumbling, you could even take a picnic with you as a reward for the family’s sporting efforts.

Or if you prefer to stay in the garden, you might like to try screening Dad’s favourite film via your own outdoor cinema – you’ll just need a mini projector, and a white sheet will do the trick for the screen part!

Father’s Day is all about showing appreciation for the little, but everyday actions Dads do, without needing to splash the cash. With this in mind, we hope you enjoy making the most of the small things, hopefully using some of the above tips, this year!
